Internationally renowned architecture and development firm, Architects Orange (AO), confirms plans for a 4.85 acre entertainment complex, Starlight Cinemas West Grove, at the corner of Valley View and Chapman in West Garden Grove, CA, by developer Daniel Akarakian, Cinemas Management, Inc. Construction is set to begin mid-July.
Designed by AO Restaurant Studio, one of Architect Orange’s ten practice groups, Starlight Cinemas West Grove will encompass a 29,081 square foot movie theater – part of an expansion and renovation of the original 11,000 square foot 4 Star Movie Theater, built in 1974. There will be an addition of 7,700 square feet of restaurants that includes Jack in the Box and other casual dining options, in addition to an automated car wash, pedestrian walkways, parking, and more.
The project will consist of two phases, phase one is the renovation of the now antiquated four-screen building into a state-of-the-art, three stadium-style auditoriums featuring luxe motorized recliners and updated Dolby sound system. The lobby will undergo a major renovation giving it a fresh, sophisticated and modern look.

Phase two will consist of taking over the adjacent bowling alley, converting and dividing the existing shell structure into 7,700 square feet of restaurant space in the front and adding seven more auditoriums in the back — connecting to the existing movie theater to create a 10-screen, 650-seat luxury seating complex.

“We approached the design as a hospitality project– creating a boutique hotel atmosphere in the lobby with a clean, warm and modern look,” said Pedram Shokati, Associate and Senior Designer at Architects Orange.
Shokati adds, “selecting materials for a movie theater lobby is always challenging. Finishes in the lobby should be able to withstand heavy traffic, not to mention popcorn, butter and soda. There is a good synergy between the cinema and the adjacent restaurant which will include patio seating to enjoy the beautiful Southern California weather. The community needs a warm, inviting gathering place and Starlight Cinemas is going to achieve that.”
